UV lamps lose their performance with increasing service life. As the graph shows, the intensity initially falls relatively quickly, later (after about 2/3 of the lifetime) more slowly. The high and low pressure mercury lamps have an average effective life of between 4,000 and 6,000 hours (in continuous use).

Low-pressure lamps have a mercury resonance line at 253.7nm, while other lines have almost no resonance.

The high-pressure lamps, on the other hand, cover the entire UV range and part of the visible range.
