Plant extract polyphenols

Polyphenols is a wide variety of thousands of compounds, from simple molecule to large polymers, and all having a t least one phenol group (hydroxyl group bounds on aromatic ring). Their structure provides them potential health benefits such as protection from cancers or cardiovascular diseases, when added as food supplements. Polyphenols are also used in various cosmetics to protect the skin from oxidation.

Polyphenolics materials are produced from plant substances using water or solvent extraction, but these extracts have a limited purity. Synthetic adsorbents have the ability to adsorb polyphenols from these extracts and these compounds are recovered by elution to produce a higher purity and greater yield.

The adsorbents are reusable and can work for hundreds of cycles if regenerated and operated in good conditions.

The synthetic adsorbents may have different chemistry (styrene-DVB, Acrylic), offering different pore size (from 20 to 300 Angstroms), specific surface area (typically from 300 to 1200 m2/g), hydrophobicity, polarity. The right choice of adsorbent will depend of the raw material and the polyphenols which is targeted.

We can extract polyphenols from various fruits, vegetable, oils and the main feed stocks for valuable polyphenolic molecules are cranberry juice, blueberry, grape, tea, pomegranate juice and waste, apple,

The recovery of polyphenols from plants is proceed in three main steps:

  • extraction from the feed stock
  • loading by adsorption on a synthetic adsorbent
  • elution or desorption using an appropriate solvent, food compliant and easy to recycle.
